A national public relations podcast recently put the spotlight on the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and its student-run firm, MaverickPR.
Three recent graduates, a current student, and Karen Weber, UNO PRSSA and MaverickPR advisor spoke with host Peter Woolfolk on his podcast “Public Relations Review” about some of the national awards earned by the chapter in the past year. Weber was joined by Kylie Squires, UNO PRSSA president, and recent graduates Sarah Fixmer, Maya Solarana, and Okina Tran — all of whom held positions in UNO PRSSA and MaverickPR prior to graduating.
A portion of the talk discussed a record-breaking performance in the 2020 PRSA Nebraska Paper Anvil Awards, held in January 2020, in which UNO students from the School of Communication collectively earned 17 awards, including three awards competing against professional firms.
The group spoke to Woolfolk about the history of PRSSA at UNO, working with nonprofit organizations and small businesses in the Omaha community, and their career aspirations. They also discussed UNO PRSSA’s “Talk, Not Talking Points” campaign to advocate for diversity and inclusion, which earned “Best of Show” in the Student category at the state level and an honorable mention at the national level.
The episode can be heard on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and numerous other podcast and streaming services.
Launched in early 2019, the Public Relations Review podcast is hosted by Peter Woolfolk and connects listeners with public relations professionals, educators, authors, and others across the country. Woolfolk is the president and founder of Communications Strategies in Nashville, Tenn., and a public relations professional himself with 25+ years of experience. Among his career highlights, he served as press secretary for various committees in the U.S. House of Representatives and as special assistant/communications to the Assistant Secretary of Education in the Clinton administration.
School of Communication students and faculty followed up their record-breaking showing with another year of recognitions at the 2021 Nebraska PRSA Paper Anvil Awards. View a list of this year’s recognitions.
