After correctly predicting the 2024 Men’s College World Series (CWS) champion, a University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) statistician has returned with his annual Men’s College World Series predictions, and the numbers say, “Woo Pig Sooie.”
⚾️ What’s new: Andrew Swift, D.Sc., an associate professor in UNO’s Department of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences, ran 10,000 simulations of the tournament, and the Arkansas Razorbacks showed the highest probability of winning it all this year at 31%.
🔮 Crunching the numbers: Swift modeled the teams based on their regular season performance and then simulated the CWS 10,000 times. The percentage below reflects how often each team won the CWS in Swift’s 10,000 simulations (rounded to the nearest 0.5%):
- Arkansas: 31%
- Coastal Carolina: 18.5%
- LSU: 15%
- Oregon State: 13.5%
- UCLA: 9.5%
- Arizona: 7.5%
- Louisville: 3.5%
- Murray State: 1.5%
🎤 Swift on the powerful intersection of sports and math: "Each year, I look forward to using the College World Series as a way to show what mathematics and statistics can really do. Not just in theory, but in ways that connect to something people are passionate about. Sports are full of patterns, probabilities, and stories waiting to be uncovered by data. My hope is that these predictions help others see how math is a powerful tool that touches nearly every part of our lives, even the game we love.”
🔎 Zoom in:
- Last year, Swift correctly picked Tennessee to win it all over Texas A&M, who he gave the second-highest odds to.
- He also predicted Vanderbilt’s 2019 championship run.
- Swift picked the Commodores to repeat as champions in 2021 after the 2020 CWS was cancelled due to COVID, but Mississippi State, who Swift gave the third-highest odds to, took home the hardware.
🌎 The big picture: As co-hosts of the CWS, Swift’s highly anticipated annual predictions are just one of the many ties that UNO has with “The Greatest Show on Dirt.”
